More apartments and retail planned for Lamar Street in the Cedars
Developer Jack Matthews plans to build another mixed-use residential complex in the Cedars neighborhood just south of downtown. The $28.7 million development will include 280 apartments, retail and a parking garage on the vacant lot at 1210 S. Lamar St. Work is planned to begin the second quarter of 2014.
The site is a few blocks from the historic Sears Roebuck and Co building Matthews bought in 1997 and converted to the South Side on Lamar residential complex. Across the street from the site is the restored manufacturing building Matthews redeveloped into the 76-room Nylo Hotel, which opened last year. Matthews is also constructing the nearby Bellview Street apartment community, a $24 million, 5 story project with 164 units planned to open fall of 2014.
